Who is counselling for?

Everybody. We all need help figuring out what’s going on, where we are getting stuck and how to move forward. Seeking help is a normal and healthy choice.

You might want help to work through some challenges in your relationships, to explore how to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life, or to find a way through anxiety and depression. All reasons, no matter how big or small, are valid reasons to seek help.

Why seek help?

We can all have difficulty in trying to change habitual patterns of behaviour. Often our attempts to change end in frustration, failure, and pain.

We now know what is unconscious in us has a far greater influence on our behaviours than what we are conscious of. This explains how,  when we act alone, we struggle to change because of our unconscious patterns.

I guide you to become more aware of your unconscious patterns, bringing them to the light, so that they have less power over you. This process of self-discovery enables you to transform and make more life enhancing choices.

More than just talking.

Just talking is not always enough. Often you can be left frustrated by going in circles or feel like you’re only scratching the surface. At the heart of how I work is mindfulness. Mindfulness helps you access the unconscious information by bringing your attention to your present experience.

We know a lot of unconscious trauma and emotions are held in the body. By bringing our attention to the present experience, this information can be seen, understood, and transformed. This then enables new ways of being to be found. Essentially, the capacity to directly observe our experience, rather than simply talking or engaging in mental reflection, can be a potent and transformative experience.

More than just focusing on the past and problems.

It’s important to look at where you are getting stuck, and what’s happened in your past. Yet that is not enough, we also focus on what’s important to you, what’s seeking to emerge in your life and how to live more closely aligned to these values. For some people this might be discovering what brings them meaning and purpose, for others this could be exploring what work aligns to your values. I help you discover what’s important and meaningful, and how to move in that direction with all your heart.

It’s the fit that’s most important.

You are at the heart of what I do. I work in a relational way which holds our relationship at the centre of what we do together. This is essential as research shows the relationship that we form is the biggest indicator of success in therapy.  I offer a warm, collaborative and accepting space where all of you is welcome. You are welcomed with kindness, gentleness and respect.

How often and for how long?

This very much depends on what you bring to counselling. Some people will need a shorter amount of sessions than others. Our first session is an opportunity to discuss how many sessions will be appropriate.

What is Psychosynthesis?

Psychosynthesis is a holistic approach and has often been called the psychology of the self. Imagine you the conductor of the orchestra directing all the different instruments of your life so that they play in harmony. This is Psychosynthesis; learning the art of how to conduct your life in harmony. At the heart of this approach is a belief that we are all moving towards a greater place of harmony and fulfillment in our lives, and sometimes we need a hand to learn how to play in tune. Psychosynthesis is a flexible approach that encompasses many other modalities when appropriate.

Some of the other modalities I use:

·         Acceptance Commitment Therapy

·         Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

·         Mindfulness

·         Hakomi

·         Person-centered Approach

·         Attachment Theory

·         Art Therapy

My fees are $100.00 per 50 minute session. WINZ Subsidies/Disability Allowance can be applied for where appropriate.

I am a qualified counsellor and a clinical member of PAnzA and receive regular supervision. As I see ongoing training as essential, I am currently training as a Psychosynthesis Psychotherapist. Please feel free to contact me for more information.
